DevOps and Agile are latest buzz words in IT best-practices. But what are they? Methodologies? Models? Do they conflict with IT Service Management and ITIL, in effect replacing this global set of best-practices for IT, or are they complementary best practices, adding value to the ITIL framework?

 DevOps, Agile and ITIL:  In Conflict or Complementary?


This presentation will discuss define and describe DevOps, and Agile, and explain why these concepts are such hot topics within IT. We will consider how DevOps relates to Agile methods, techniques and best-practices, and how these practices add value not just to each other, but also to the ITIL framework itself – and can in fact work within ITIL to help optimize specific ITIL stages and processes.

We will consider how DevOps, when employed within an overall ITIL framework, can help break down the barriers that so often arise between development and operations organizations, resulting in improved communication, collaboration, and performance across IT and development groups.  We will explore how the Agile development methodology can operate very effectively within ITIL, accelerating the development and deployment of applications within ITIL’s service design and service transition stages.  We’ll also see how Agile methodologies benefit from a DevOps approach, facilitating collaboration between stakeholders, quality of deliverables, and speed to market.  

Finally, we will delve into where DevOps and Agile specifically impact the ITIL framework, and how a DevOps  approach combined with Agile can add value across the IITL service lifecycle.


  Mr. Paul M. Dooley

Paul is the President and Principal Consultant of Optimal Connections LLC. With over thirty years of experience in planning and managing technology services, Paul has held numerous positions in both support and management. Corporate experience includes working for such companies as Motorola, FileNet, and QAD. He is also experienced in service desk infrastructure development, support center consolidation, deployment of web portals and Knowledge Management Systems, as well as service marketing strategy and activities.


Currently Paul delivers a variety of services to IT organizations, including Support Center Analyst and Manager training, ITIL Foundation and Intermediate Level training, Best-Practice Assessments, Support Center Audits, and general IT Consulting.


His degrees include a BA and MBA. Paul is certified in most ITIL Intermediate levels and is a certified ITIL Expert. He is also on the HDI Faculty, and trains for ITpreneurs, Global Knowledge, Phoenix TS, and other IT training organizations. For more on Paul, visit
